IMPROVEMENT OF THE ARTS INDUSTRY
THROUGH EMPOWERMENT OF THE ARTS WORKER

EAP is a network of Bay Area arts workers and emerging leaders who are driven to improve the arts sector together. Through our Equity Framework and four focus areas: Cultural Equity, Regenerative Practice, Arts & Capital, and Creative City, we:

  • Create models for systemic power shifts

  • Remove assumptions

  • Increase diversity of experience

  • Re-center marginalized experience and voices (race, ability, gender, sexuality, class, age, health status)

By empowering the individual arts worker with personal and professional development, and through the research and development of new models of transaction and interaction in the field, our network works to shift the industry.

  • If you dedicate your time to fostering the creation and dissemination of creative work, you are one of us!

  • If you want to collaborate to create positive change in the art field that ripples out into communities, we want you by our side!

  • If you are looking for a network of allies, mentors, and partners, we are here to support you!

Our end goals is an arts industry that is equitable for all people, is a valued and sustainable career sector, and honors the individual arts worker as a creative and whole person.

  • Our Values

    • Empowerment
    • “Gumbo” (more than “diversity” , Gumbo represents the deep richness we get when we actively include and blend diverse people and experiences into our work.)
    • Responsiveness
    • Proactivity

  • Our Goals

By establishing and nurturing an innovative, collaborative, and proactive network, as well as focusing on empowering individuals, EAP will ensure that culture workers have access to meaningful work, a supportive community, and an advocate for sustainable practices.

Over time, the arts sector itself will be transformed to become healthier, to better harness creativity, and to reflect the values that matter most to today’s emerging arts leaders: empowerment, relevancy, and diversity.

  • Our History

Rising out of focus groups on next generation arts leadership conducted by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Irvine Foundation, the Emerging Arts Professionals/San Francisco Bay Area was begun in 2008 by a small group of emerging artists and arts administrators. Led by Ebony McKinney and Adam Fong, the steering committee of what was then known as San Francisco Bay Area Emerging Arts Professionals (SFBAEAP) outlined plans for the organization and hosted its first event, Evolve & Vocalize: A Spotlight on Next Generation Arts Leadership.

Over 80 people from across the Bay Area gathered at SOMArts to share their perspectives and vision for what SFBAEAP could accomplish. Gatherings continued in 2009, establishing a mix of networking and professional development, with a focus on evolving attitudes within the sector towards next generation leaders, their issues, and their perspectives. This approach was formalized in strategic planning, and in 2010 EAP launched its Spring Series and its first fellowship cohort.

Since then, the capstone Fellowship event, EMERGENCE, has become the annual network convening, and a collaborative platform for Bay Area arts and culture workers to connect, share ideas, and elevate their work and voices. Throughout the year, EAP continues to host social events, panel discussions, and other special learning opportunities. EAP is now continuing to build its programs and expand its reach, guided and informed by the values upon which it was founded: collaboration, diversity, empowerment, innovation, proactivity and relevancy.
