A 9 MONTH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM | AREAS OF STUDY: NETWORKED APPROACHES, REGENERATIVE PRACTICES, OPEN SYSTEMS, RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT | SPRING SERIES | ONLINE RESOURCES | EMERGENCE (Annual Network Convening)

  • Our Mission

Emerging Arts Professionals/SFBA is a network focused on empowerment, leadership, and growth of next generation arts and culture workers in the San Francisco Bay Area through knowledge sharing, learning opportunities, and partnerships. By supporting today’s emerging models and mindsets, we hope to generate a path for individuals’ meaningful and sustainable work and to stimulate a vibrant, integrated, and evolving arts and culture sector.

  • Our Goals

By establishing and nurturing an innovative, collaborative, and proactive network, as well as focusing on empowering individuals, EAP will ensure that culture workers have access to meaningful work, a supportive community, and an advocate for sustainable practices.

Over time, the arts sector itself will be transformed to become healthier, to better harness creativity, and to reflect the values that matter most to today’s emerging arts leaders: empowerment, relevancy, and diversity.

  • Our Values

EAP is guided and informed by the following values:

EMPOWERMENT: EAP seeks to support and strengthen individuals and groups in order to help them pursue their own goals and aspirations.

DIVERSITY: EAP believes in the value of divergent and unique perspectives. EAP will promote the involvement and integration of individuals and organizations representing the full spectrum of cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, ages, abilities, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

RELEVANCY: EAP strives to be responsive and relevant to its members and the changing environment and avoid redundancy

  • Methodology

EAP engages and builds the network though these working methods

COLLABORATION: EAP strives to build its network and programs through partnership and open dialogue. EAP will maintain inclusive and democratic working methods.

INNOVATION: EAP believes in the process of innovation, and will encourage experimentation and creativity in order to support the development and transformation of the field.

PROACTIVITY: EAP strives to be proactive and action-oriented seeking out opportunities and needs as well as working eficiently.

  • Our History

Rising out of focus groups on next generation arts leadership conducted by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Irvine Foundation, the Emerging Arts Professionals/San Francisco Bay Area was begun in 2008 by a small group of emerging artists and arts administrators. Led by Ebony McKinney and Adam Fong, the steering committee of what was then known as SFBAEAP outlined plans for the organization and hosted its first event, Evolve & Vocalize: A Spotlight on Next Generation Arts Leadership.

Over 80 people from across the Bay Area gathered at SOMArts to share their perspectives and vision for what SFBAEAP could accomplish. Gatherings continued in 2009, establishing EAP’s mix of networking and professional development, with a focus on evolving attitudes within the sector towards next generation leaders, their issues, and their perspectives. This approach was formalized in strategic planning, and in 2010 EAP launched its Spring Series and its first fellowship cohort.

Since then, the capstone Fellowship event, EMERGENCE, has become the annual network convening, and a collaborative platform for Bay Area arts and culture workers to connect, share ideas, and elevate their work and voices. Through the remainder of the year, EAP continues to host social events, panel discussions, and other special learning opportunities. EAP/SFBA is now continuing to build its programs and expand its reach, guided and informed by the values upon which it was founded: collaboration, diversity, empowerment, innovation, proactivity and relevancy.
